If you’ve some time to spare before departure there are some sights to see in and around IJmuiden including the North Sea Locks which are some of the largest in the world. As you’d expect, seafood is a speciality of the region and there’s a great choice of restaurants serving a range of both Dutch and international cuisine.
Explore the North
Newcastle is the largest city in north east England and has a great deal for the visitor to explore. For example it’s had a castle that has stood on the same spot since Roman times and whose exhibition centre has been recently transformed to create a fantastic visitor experience. Just an hour’s drive from the city centre on the beautiful Northumberland coast you’ll find the imposing Bamburgh Castle looking out over a long, sandy beach. Further north still you’ll find yourself in Berwick upon Tweed, a beautiful town near to the Scottish border. From port is just 1 hour to Scotland and 2 hours to Edinburgh.
